Love poem spam
March 2nd, 2009It’s refreshing to be in a country where even text message spam feels a bit less calculating. Living in China, one gets used to being sent pleas (with detailed bank account info) from long-lost “daughters” and desperate, broke “friends”. In Peru, it’s poetry services. Sent to my phone over the weekend:
Conquista a tu pareja con las mejores frases y poemas de Amor! Responde POE para recibir cada dia. GRATIS 3 dias y luego S/.0.50/dia. Envia POE al 440.
Win over your partner with better phrases and poems of Love! Reply “POE” and receive them every day. Three FREE and then S/.50 per day. Send “POE” to 440.
Cyrano de Bergerac, in your pocket.

Haha. Mr. Handshakes, I have to inform you that in China now we also have this technology: 2 weeks ago the company Guanxi started to advertise a new line of services. You text “PU” and they send a romantic pickup line.
My guess is that they must have earned loads of money that weekend, as a lot of people I know were sending messages to see how stupid the lines were. I done it myself a few times, I admit.
BTW, do you have a Guanxi in Lima? If there is not, have you considered opening one? In Shanghai they seems to be doing really well.

Pick-up lines, sure. I still think there is something more endearing and less calculating about being sent poems, which is why I smiled. Could you get the pick-up lines sent in Chinese? I’m not sure I’ve ever heard one.
